Why Light Therapy Might Be the Wellness Tool You Didn’t Know You Needed

Advanced Light Therapy Bed

I’ve been enjoying Beem Light Sauna since they opened, and I’m lucky to call the owners not only wellness partners, but friends. As someone who’s always looking for simple, science-backed ways to feel better in my body, Beem has been a grounding part of my routine.

I started with their unlimited red light and sauna package, and recently tried the new Advanced Light Therapy session they now offer. Since I often recommend Beem to my clients, I wanted to share my personal experience with each offering, the benefits I’ve noticed, what surprised me, and how I’ve integrated it into my own self-care.

Red Light Therapy: My Favorite Winter Ritual

Red light quickly became one of my favorite forms of self-care. During long Minnesota winters, it helped ease my seasonal depression in a gentle, consistent way. For me, those 15-minute sessions were more than just a treatment—they were a pause. A breath. A reason to take care of myself during a season when that’s often hard to do.

This past year was especially challenging. My husband underwent major surgery in October to remove his esophagus, and as I supported him and our kids, red light therapy became one of the few things I did just for me. The fact that our friends own Beem made it easier to say yes because I was supporting them and myself at the same time.

The sessions are incredibly relaxing. I often feel like I could drift off to sleep while lying under the warm light, especially on cold, rainy days. I usually pair it with a 40-minute sauna, and I’ve found I prefer doing red light before the sauna (sweaty + stillness isn’t my favorite combo).

Beyond mood support, I’ve noticed some lightening of age spots and relief from sore muscles. Like most things in wellness, the benefits really come with consistency. One session might leave you relaxed, but going a few times a week? That’s when the real magic starts to show.

Infrared Sauna: I Was Skeptical, But I'm In

I’ll be honest that I wasn’t sure I’d love the sauna. and while I know saunas have research-backed benefits for heart, lung, and brain health, I’ve never been a fan of heat. (Minnesota winters are kind of my comfort zone.)

But the sauna at Beem surprised me. It was calming, not claustrophobic. Some days the time passed slowly, but most of the time it flew by, especially if I listened to a good meditation or watched a little “junk TV.” They have an iPad and a great sound system, so I’d queue up a show or playlist and just let myself be.

And the best part? I felt amazing afterward. I went consistently through the winter, and I only got sick once, even working in a school full of coughs and colds. Of course, that’s just my experience, but it’s one that made me a believer. The sauna was part of what helped me feel strong, resilient, and a little more like myself again.

Advanced Light Therapy: My First Impressions

I was genuinely excited (and curious) to try Beem’s new green and blue light treatment. I tried the full 45-minute session in a full-body bed that looks a bit like a tanning bed, but with a very different purpose. It is a gentle mix of green, blue, and red light therapies all in one power-packed session.

Green light is being explored for pain relief and inflammation. Blue light has been shown to support skin health and acne. The session alternates through green, blue, and red lights, and while it’s warmer than I expected, the built-in fan and pillow made it comfortable.

For me, the green felt a bit more intense than red light therapy. The blue light portion in particular felt hot (thankfully, it’s short—about five minutes). I played calming music during the session, but I might try a podcast next time to stay a little more engaged. The sound system is great, and I love ending with the cold mint towel (a true spa moment).

The best part? I’ve struggled with cubital tunnel syndrome for years (nerve pain in my hands and elbows that has disrupted sleep and made daily tasks hard). I’ve tried almost everything: acupuncture, ultrasound, physical therapy, injections… with very little relief. But after just one green light session, I noticed a difference. The pain wasn’t gone, but it eased. Enough to give me hope.

I’m cautiously optimistic that with a few more sessions, I may be able to avoid surgery. And honestly, if green light therapy helps me manage this kind of pain, it’s worth every minute.

Final Thoughts

My experience at Beem has been both personal and powerful. I’ve leaned on it during hard seasons, found new ways to care for myself, and discovered tools that I now confidently recommend to my coaching clients.

If you’re curious, my best advice is this: try a package that allows you to go consistently. Wellness is rarely about one-off fixes; it’s about the small, steady steps that build up over time.

I’m grateful to be part of Beem’s growing community, and I’m excited to keep exploring what sauna and light therapy can do for my clients, my family, and for myself.
